Technology continues to transform nearly every aspect of daily life, including personal safety. The article "Wearable Technology: The Bra Designed to Shock Attackers" (BBC News, 2013) discusses the development of the SHE (Society Harnessing Equipment) bra, a wearable device created by three engineering students in India after the tragic 2012 Delhi gang rape. This technology is designed to deliver an electric shock to an attacker while simultaneously sending GPS coordinates and emergency text messages to family members and local authorities (BBC News, 2013).

I selected this article because it discusses two subjects that I find especially interesting: technological innovation and social responsibility. As someone interested in design and technology, I enjoy learning how engineers and designers can develop products that solve real-world problems instead of simply making life more convenient. This outlook makes the article thought provoking and relevant to its audience.

The article's main message suggests that wearable technology has the potential to improve women's safety by providing immediate protection and emergency communication during dangerous situations (BBC News, 2013). While I agree that wearable devices like the SHE bra can help women defend themselves and alert authorities more quickly, I believe they should be viewed as only one small part of a much larger solution. Technology, in many instances, can provide valuable assistance during emergencies, but it cannot eliminate the social and cultural causes of gender-based violence. Lasting change requires stronger laws, better education, improved law enforcement policies, and changes in societal attitudes toward women.

Several pieces of evidence support this position. According to the BBC article, the creators interviewed women living in hostels who shared experiences of harassment before designing the device. Because this was created using the information from real life victims, it makes the technology more effective at addressing real problems instead of assumed ones.

The article also explains that the inventors' goal extends beyond creating a single product. Manisha Mohan states that she hopes women everywhere, including those living in rural areas; will eventually be able to walk confidently, even at night, because of advances in personal safety technology. Although the product was still being refined, the team's vision illustrates how engineering can be used to improve quality of life and empower vulnerable populations.

Additional scholarly evidence supports the usefulness of wearable safety technology. The World Health Organization (2021) estimates that nearly one in three women worldwide experience physical or sexual violence during their lifetime. Because violence against women remains a widespread global issue, technologies that allow victims to quickly contact emergency services or share their location could improve response times and potentially reduce injuries. Likewise, A speech delivered by UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous (2023) argues that digital technologies, including wearable devices and mobile safety applications, can empower women by increasing access to emergency assistance and improving personal security.

Despite these benefits, there are also important arguments against relying heavily on wearable technology for women's safety. One of the strongest criticisms is that devices such as the SHE bra may unintentionally shift responsibility for preventing assault onto potential victims rather than addressing the actions of offenders. Instead of expecting women to wear defensive technology, critics argue that governments and communities should invest more resources into preventing violence through education, stronger legal systems, and improved policing.

The BBC article itself acknowledges the limitations of the device. The inventors explain that the electrical components were still too bulky for everyday use and required significant improvements before the product could become practical for widespread adoption (2013). This illustrates that innovative ideas often face technical challenges before they can become reliable consumer products.

There are also concerns about whether wearable safety devices may provide users with a false sense of security. If the technology fails to activate, malfunctions, or cannot be used quickly enough during an emergency, the person wearing may remain vulnerable. The article discusses a similar concern regarding another wearable technology called the Flutter dress, whose creator emphasizes that assistive technology must be extremely reliable because users may depend on it in life-threatening situations (BBC News, 2013).

A balenced perspective recognizes that wearable technology is neither a complete solution nor an ineffective one. Instead, it represents an important tool that can complement broader social efforts. Devices like the SHE bra have the potential to increase women's confidence, improve emergency response, and provide additional protection during dangerous situations. Sustainable progress requires stronger laws, educational programs that promote respect and equality, community awareness.

The SHE bra is an inspiring example of students using their technical knowledge to respond to a real societal problem. Although wearable safety technology has limitations and cannot replace broader needed social changes, it offers meaningful support that could help protect women in emergency situations. By combining innovative technology with education, legal reform, and cultural change, society can make greater progress toward reducing continued violence against women.
