Closing the Gender Gap in Tech Companies Requires more than just hiring more Women.
The article Exploring the Gender Gap in Tech Companies: Why Aren't There More Women? by Chaudhry, Wall, and Wall (2019) examines why women remain under-represented in the technology industry despite increasing diversity initiatives. I chose this article because technology shapes nearly every aspect of our lives, yet women continue to face challenges entering and advancing in the field. As someone interested in design and technology, I wanted to better understand why this gap still exists.
After reading the article, I believe the gender gap in technology is caused more by workplace culture, unconscious bias, and limited advancement opportunities than by a lack of ability or interest. The authors explain that women make up approximately 51% of the overall workforce but only about 25% of employees in U.S. technology companies (Chaudhry et al., 2019). Although many companies promote diversity initiatives, the article argues that meaningful change requires creating workplaces where women feel respected, valued, and supported throughout their careers.
One of the article's strongest points is its discussion of workplace culture. The authors cite research showing that many women in technology have experienced harassment or discrimination, leading some to leave the industry altogether. They also point out that women perform just as well as men in STEM courses but remain under-represented in engineering and computer science programs (Chaudhry et al., 2019). This suggests that the issue is not a lack of ability but rather barriers that discourage women before and during their careers.
The article's recommendations are practical and achievable. It encourages schools to expose girls to STEM subjects earlier while urging organizations to improve mentoring programs, recruitment practices, and workplace policies. Additional research supports these recommendations. McKinsey & Company (2023) found that companies with more diverse leadership teams often achieve stronger financial performance. The report explains that businesses do not have to choose between profitability and diversity; the two goals can complement one another. Since 2015, McKinsey has examined how workforce diversity influences financial performance, and each study has shown that the relationship between diverse leadership and financial outperformance has grown stronger over time (McKinsey & Company, 2023).
Looking beyond financial performance, diversity also promotes innovation. The National Center for Women & Information Technology (2024) reports that diverse teams generate more creative ideas, make better decisions, and demonstrate stronger problem-solving abilities. These findings suggest that increasing gender diversity benefits not only employees but also organizations and the technology industry as a whole.
At the same time, there are arguments against this perspective. Some researchers believe the gender gap is influenced more by personal career preferences than by discrimination alone. They argue that many women voluntarily choose careers outside traditional STEM fields because those careers better align with their interests. The article itself references research suggesting that some women pursue other career paths despite having the skills to succeed in STEM (Chaudhry et al., 2019). Others maintain that hiring decisions should focus solely on qualifications rather than diversity goals.
Although these perspectives deserve consideration, I do not believe they fully explain why women leave technology careers at higher rates or remain under-represented in leadership positions. Career decisions are shaped by workplace experiences, advancement opportunities, organizational culture, and access to mentorship. If companies create more inclusive environments and remove barriers to career advancement, more women may choose to remain in technology and build long-term careers in the industry.
Overall, the article demonstrates that closing the gender gap requires more than simply hiring additional women. Companies must foster inclusive workplace cultures where employees can succeed regardless of gender, while schools and universities continue encouraging girls to pursue STEM opportunities. Addressing these challenges will not only create fairer workplaces but also strengthen innovation, improve organizational performance, and benefit the technology industry as a whole.
